There was that time Uncle Mike chased the kids around outside with an Elmo puppet. But aside from that, what’s the closest the kiddos have come to puppetry in the backyard? Thought so. I mean backyard puppet shows—who does that? Open Eye Figure Theatre, that’s who.
Now through August 7, they’re bringing two family-friendly puppet shows, The Amazing Cow Boat and The Adventures of Juan Bobo, into parks and backyards around the city—and you’re invited. All performances are free and open to the public.
The Driveway Tour is a very fun way to develop real grassroots community involvement. We were lucky enough to attend one of these performances a few years back. The hosts arranged it as a potluck picnic-style dinner and it rained that day so the whole production was moved into their living room (Neighbor of the Year Award to these kind souls who welcomed a bunch of strangers into their home). Interested in hosting one in your neighborhood? Make it happen by contacting the theatre at drivewaytour@openeyetheatre.org.
If you host a puppet show in your driveway, they will come.
